After serving in the United States Marine Corp, Jim Hernandez attended Palomar College. While working locally he continued his education at California State Polytechnic University (Cal Poly, Pomona) and became an architect. For the past fourty-two years he has been a small business owner of his own local architectural firm. Jim has been a San Marcos resident for over 50 years. In that time he has remained civic minded and served his community in many ways, including, Planning Commissioner for 14 years, past president of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce, San Marcos Boys & Girls Club and the Palomar College Foundation. During the years, he has been a community volunteer on various San Marcos City task force and community projects. Some of these include the Water Ways Taskforce, Ridge Line Ordinance, Creek Street Specific Plan, and Chairman of the University District Specific Plan. Jim and his wife Barbara have been blessed to share thirty-four years of marriage and have four children along with 2 grandchildren. Jim feels so fortunate to be a part of the City of San Marcos and looks forward to serving his community even more.

Achievements

  • Reducing overhead by 14% during his election term.

  • Saving over $400,000 in facility construction costs by providing alternative design.

  • Responsible for bringing over 3.5 million kWh kilowatts of solar power with revenues of over $ 100,000.00 which will offset future water rates.

  • Integral member of board to bring desalinated water directly to Vallecitos Water District.

  • Responsible for opening South Lake, a community recreation facility providing a variety of community activities.

  • Keeping water rates stable for the last two years.

  • Keeping sewer rates stable for the last four years.

  • Responsible for providing over 1 million dollars annually in leasing revenue which will offset future water rates.

  • Providing reclaimed water to local users.

  • Approved a program creating educational scholarships to local students.
